Celtic fans have said that they would prefer Jens Berthel Askou to become the new Celtic manager ahead of Roberto Martinez.
Askou received 65 per cent of the vote on our TalkingPoints poll, with many Hoops fans turning their nose up at the idea of Martinez coming to Parkhead.
However, I think that the Spaniard could prove to be a better fit than the high-flying Motherwell boss.
Who would you prefer to become the next Celtic manager?
Tell us why in the comments…
Why Roberto Martinez would be a good fit for Celtic
Don’t get me wrong, Askou is extremely talented, but Martinez offers different qualities that may be overlooked.
While he hasn’t managed at club level for over 10 years, the 52-year-old has history of competing at the highest level. Having managed in the Premier League and major international tournaments, he would make that transition to Scottish football easily.
Managers have also struggled to switch from dominating games domestically to going on the back foot in Europe. He can be pragmatic, but also attacking when required.
Managing egos and expectation is also important. Right now, he manages the biggest ego of all: Cristiano Ronaldo.
Would you take Roberto Martinez as Celtic’s permanent manager after the World Cup?
Couple that with a nation’s hopes of seeing Ronaldo win a World Cup before he hangs his boots up, Martinez is here to keep a lid on things and ensure that the ego of Ronaldo doesn’t disrupt his squad’s harmony.
Finally, Martinez already has someone at Celtic who lives and breathes the club. He has worked with Shaun Maloney as a player and a coach so knows he can trust him. Having someone you already know makes the switch much easier, both culturally and emotionally.
One downside is that any negotiations will have to wait until Portugal’s World Cup campaign is over, which could affect how they operate in the transfer market. But, finding a high-quality manager is crucial and Martinez does fit that bill.
