It’s been quite a few days, with the furore surrounding Celtic’s goal on Thursday night entering the third day of overreaction.
This is the story that just doesn’t seem to be going away, with prominent pundits like Michael Stewart dedicating whole columns about it this weekend and BBC Sportsound wheeling out the SFA chief of refs to second guess Bobby Madden’s decisions.
So where was the outcry when Rangers scored an offside goal in September? Was Crawford Allan on national radio suggesting the officials got it wrong that day, as Fashion Sakala netted an effort in a 1-1 draw against Motherwell? I don’t remember that.
I remember Graham Alexander being upset about the situation. I remember a bit of chatter on Sportscene from Richard Foster. I don’t recall almost constant coverage, managers suggesting they’d go to jail if they really spoke their mind or the Scottish FA going on the record about the incident.
It’s funny because Sakala’s blatantly offside goal isn’t even mentioned in the BBC Scotland match report.
You can see it in the official highlights on YouTube though. You’ll notice Sakala is miles more offside than Kyogo was said to be, latching on to header to poke home from close range.
The Kyogo goal was a borderline decision. It is one for extensive analysis on VAR. It’s not a signal of some mad officiating error that strikes at the heart of Rangers’ title bid.
It’s strange to me it takes a Celtic site such as this one to point out these double standards. Surely others who work in the media don’t have ridiculously short memories?
I’d put money on Ange Postecoglou being asked about this at some point tomorrow too. A fourth day. That’ll be fun.
