Celtic should hijack Rangers’ attempts to sign Sheffield Wednesday’s Pierce Charles

Celtic will need a goalkeeper in the summer and Sheffield Wednesday ‘keeper Pierce Charles is a perfect candidate for the Hoops.

Kasper Schmeichel’s long-term injury means he will almost certainly depart on a free transfer at the end of this season, leaving Viljami Sinisalo and Ross Doohan as the only options to select from.

Charles has been linked with a move to Rangers, where he could reunite with his former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, but Celtic should be all over this and attempt to hijack any move.

Has he done enough?

Why Celtic should beat Rangers to the signing of Pierce Charles

Despite Sheffield Wednesday’s nightmare season, Charles is one of those who still shone.

The 20-year-old is out of contract in 2027 and is one of the few assets the Owls could sell to make some sort of money following their relegation to League One.

In the last couple of seasons, Celtic’s policy has seen them sign experienced goalkeepers whom they can replace every two years.

With Charles, they would have a safer, long-term option that could genuinely compete with Sinisalo and even sell on for a huge profit if he impressed between the sticks at Parkhead.

Celtic are more likely to offer Pierce Charles first-team football

As the goalkeeper for Northern Ireland, Charles wants to be playing regular first-team football to play for his club so that he can continue to be selected for his country.

Rangers have Jack Butland as their number one, with Liam Kelly departing in the summer on a free.

Although he has worked with Rohl before, there is no guarantee that he will be the first choice at Ibrox.

At Celtic, there is a much clearer pathway to the number one spot, and one that the 20-year-old should seriously consider.
