Celtic should not renew the contract of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at the end of the season

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain signed for Celtic in January on a six-month deal, but that should not be extended at the end of the season.

Oxlade-Chamberlain scored on his debut against Livingston and looked like he would prove to be a shrewd addition for the Hoops.

Since then, the Champions League winner has failed to really show his best and the 32-year-old should be one of the first to head for the exit door in the summer.

Why Celtic shouldn’t renew Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s contract

Brought in to provide some extra bite in midfield, question marks have to be asked about what the former Liverpool man has contributed to the team.

His eight appearances have delivered sub-par displays and he still doesn’t look fully fit in the team.

Celtic will have a new manager in the summer and therefore a chance to refresh the squad all over the pitch.

The midfield is bloated and far too one-dimensional, so change is needed.

Realistically, Oxlade-Chamberlain only has one or two more years left in his career and is probably one of the highest earners in the squad, which can be used to fund moves for players elsewhere.

Celtic must prioritise younger options

Callum McGregor isn’t getting any younger either and one day will have to be replaced. Add that in with Oxlade-Chamberlain too while Luke McCowan and Reo Hatate are also in their late 20s.

By moving on some of those to pastures new, the Bhoys can invest in younger, long-term players that can provide a springboard for the Hoops to compete on the biggest stage.

Who is the most underrated player in the Celtic side?

David Watson, Lennon Miller and others are the sort of targets the Bhoys should be looking at rather than always going for experience.
