The veteran goalkeeper’s rollercoaster form suddenly makes sense at Celtic as Schmeichel’s injury rules him out for the remainder of his contract, and probably ends his career.
Schmeichel has battled his injury since last March when he broke his shoulder on international duty with Denmark, but it appears now that there was not a full recovery, and that has been evident ever since last year’s Scottish Cup final defeat/
Loyalty only gets you so far, and can now be seen as negligence, especially when Viljami Sinisalo has been ready and waiting this whole time. Schmeichel’s admission now means that we need to discuss the uncomfortable topic of who is to blame for this calamity?

Three managers, one catastrophic Celtic failure
It started with Brendan Rodgers, who played Schmeichel through the early stages of this decline before resigning and then jumping ship for Saudi Arabia in October.
Then came the Wilfried Nancy disaster. For 33 days, we watched a manager out of his depth persist with a goalkeeper who clearly couldn’t dive, all while shipping 18 goals in just eight games.
Nancy might have been the one in the dugout for the collapse, but he enabled that by continuing to pick a clearly unfit Schmeichel.
Now, we have Martin O’Neill back to steady the ship, but even he admitted Schmeichel was getting injections to get fit for the Glasgow Derby for which he was correctly dropped, but he still played in the 2-1 defeat to Hibs.
O’Neill also picked Kasper for the Celtic Park Europa League defeat to Stuttgart, in which the Dane could, and probably should have, saved at least three of the German side’s goals. How costly does that decision look now?
Why was a 39-year-old with a shredded shoulder ever considered our best option for two cup finals and a league run-in while Viljami Sinisalo sat on the bench?
And the fact that Schmeichel’s injury was so severe, why was a replacement or cover not signed in the summer?
Is Kasper Schmeichel to blame or Celtic for incompetence?
The fact that three different managers failed to drop Schmeichel was bad enough, but Celtic have lost silverware, fallen behind in the league, and potentially annoyed a current player in Sinisalo who must have known he was continually being overlooked for a player who was clearly injured and unfit.
Does Schmeichel take a certain amount of accountability because he must have known that he was not fit enough to perform at his very best for Celtic?
On top of that, Celtic fans have watched a legendary keeper’s career potentially end in the most undignified way possible because the managers in charge wouldn’t protect him from himself.
The managers changed, but the blind loyalty to Schmeichel remained the only constant. So who is to blame for this debacle? Celtic fans need answers, and they should get them now.
