Chris Sutton has called out Kasper Schmeichel’s ‘selfishness’ in the Daily Record after the Celtic goalkeeper announced his long-term injury on CBS Sports.
First off, let’s wish Kasper well. For his career, not just his Celtic spell, to end in such a fashion is a shame and he does deserve sympathy and empathy.
However, there are two sides to this debacle, and Sutton wasn’t just fishing for headlines with what’s coming up next, he was saying exactly what some Celtic fans have been saying since the news broke.
Who is to blame for the Kasper Schmeichel calamity at Celtic?
Let us know in the comments.
Chris Sutton slams ‘selfish’ Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel
Sutton has gone in two-footed on Schmeichel and has slammed him for not mentioning the Parkhead club once during his injury revelation and how the Dane simply spoke about the loss of his World Cup dream.
Sutton explained in the Daily Record, “It’s just like Celtic weren’t in the equation with this as such.
“It just seems to be his desire to play at the World Cup. I may be wrong, but I didn’t hear him mention Celtic once.
“There’s clearly been something a bit wrong with him this season. Whether it was age or mobility or whatever it is, it comes to us all.
“But I don’t necessarily think a player should be putting their own ambitions above the team and the club, that’s selfish. Like it or not.
“I like him and admire him, but that’s just selfish behaviour really and it hasn’t served Celtic well this season, has it?
“I suppose Schmeichel will think he’s entitled to get it out there as he sees fit, but it just seemed to me that Celtic were secondary, have been the secondary.
“I might be wrong and he’ll have to explain it himself, but it seemed to me he’s using Celtic for his own cause and playing when he’s not 100 per cent.
“I might be doing him a disservice. It’s up to him to come out and it and explain.”
Sutton’s uncomfortable truth about Schmeichel is spot on
The uncomfortable truth here is that Schmeichel seems to have forgotten who pays the wages and who fills the stadium.
To hear him talk about his World Cup ambitions without so much as a nod to the club or the current race for the title is a slap in the face for Celtic supporters.
Celtic should never have been regarded as a stepping stone for Schmeichel just to reach the World Cup with Denmark. If he knew he was injured and continued to play, then he was a liability to the jersey.
Sutton is spot on because he understands what it means to play for Celtic. This club is everything or it’s nothing.
You don’t get to treat the season as secondary to your own personal swan song. If Schmeichel is prioritising his own legacy over winning trophies with Celtic, then he’s actively hurting the Parkhead club’s chances of remaining the dominant club in Scotland.
Celtic have had players who would crawl through broken glass to keep a clean sheet for this club, Joe Hart being a great case in point.
The respect Kasper had with many Celtic supporters will be gone after this revelation and, to be honest, you can’t blame them for feeling that way.
