Daily Record Celtic ‘doomed’ claim dismantled as title race reality emerges

Celtic have been framed as a side under severe pressure by the Daily Record Hotline Live podcast, but the claims made do not fully align with the reality of the title race.

The Celtic discussion, led by Keith Jackson, builds a picture of a team running out of time ahead of the trip to Dundee.

But when the key arguments are examined closely, the narrative being pushed against Celtic begins to look overstated rather than grounded in fact.

Celtic ‘pressure’ claims ignore the actual title race context

Michael Gannon sets the tone early by insisting there is ‘major, major pressure’ on Celtic heading into the weekend (3:40).

Jackson then jumps in and also claims there is ‘zero wiggle room’ and suggests Celtic could be ‘trailing Hearts by eight points’ before kick-off at Dens Park on Sunday (6:00).

That scenario depends entirely on other results going against Celtic and ignores the current structure of the table and remaining fixtures.

Position Team Played MP Won W Drawn D Lost L For GF Against GA Diff GD Points Pts

3 CelticCeltic31 19 4 8 56 34 22 61
4 MotherwellMotherwell31 14 12 5 49 23 26 54

The title race is tight, only five points separate Celtic from Hearts, but it will not be defined by a single weekend, despite how it is presented.

‘Doomed’ narrative driven by selective reading of Celtic form

It is Jackson who pushes the argument further by stating the season feels ‘a little bit doomed’ (8:01) with Gannon chipping with ‘heavy COVID season’ vibes seconds later with Jackson laughing.

He then follows that up by claiming Celtic are on ‘borrowed time in this title race’ (14:48) while ignoring the fact that if Hearts and Rangers do not win this weekend, the ball is right back in Martin O’Neill’s court.

Those conclusions rely heavily on recent hypotheticals rather than a full assessment of Celtic’s overall position and, again, no real scrutiny placed on what would happen positively for the Hoops is Rangers or Hearts drop points.

A difficult spell does not equate to a collapse, even if it is framed that way.

Dundee test framed as crisis moment despite clear overreaction

The Dundee fixture is then presented as a major danger to Celtic, with Gannon admitting he ‘wouldn’t be sure they’re going to get’ a win (14:54).

That claim overlooks the expectation levels on Celtic in these matches and treats a challenging away game as something far more decisive than it is.

Every title contender faces difficult fixtures at this stage of the season.

There is nothing unique about the pressure being described here.

Injury concerns noted but stretched into wider narrative

The discussion also highlights concerns around squad depth and injuries, including the situation involving Austin Trusty (3:58).

While those issues are valid, they are presented as part of a wider pattern suggesting Celtic cannot cope.

In reality, every team in the title race is dealing with similar challenges at this stage of the campaign.

That context is largely missing where it appears that the whole conversation is taken up with all the pressure being on Celtic while Hearts and Rangers escape any form of balanced critique by the Daily Record pair.

Pressure on Celtic is real, but it is being exaggerated, with selective arguments used to suggest the title race is beyond them when it clearly is not.
