English pundits need to stop romanticising Celtic and Rangers joining their leagues

Yes, we really are on this talking point again.

Celtic and Rangers fans have had to endure the constant conversation of them swapping the Scottish Premiership for the bright lights of the Premier League.

The Hoops are one of the most successful teams in world football, and their worldwide fanbase makes them an attractive prospect in terms of commercial revenue.

Despite that, pundits south of the border still repeat the same lazy rhetoric that Celtic and Rangers wouldn’t survive in the Championship, let alone the top flight.

Ben Foster was the latest to say on his Fozcast podcast, claiming that both sides would “get relegated straightaway” if they entered the English pyramid.

Celtic and Rangers will never join the English pyramid

It is worth noting that Foster isn’t the only figure to have made this claim in the past, and he did even admit that Celtic and Rangers would never accept an invitation to join the English leagues.

At least that bit is right.

What it does show is another lazy narrative that Celtic and Rangers aren’t good enough to compete.

Both sides play in the top two continental competitions every year, have won more trophies than most of the English Football League put together and have fanbases so big that they even put Premier League teams to shame.

Those who bash the quality of the Scottish Premiership may want to stop and look at the table. Neither of the Glasgow clubs top the table right now, even though it is a supposed closed shop.

Both teams will never abandon their roots in Scotland, especially when it is all they have known. It isn’t another Swansea City or Cardiff City situation, and never will be.

Celtic and Rangers would be two of the biggest clubs in England

People seem to forget one thing: the difference in money.

The team that finishes last in the Premier League (20th) still earns roughly 22 times more than the team that wins the Scottish Premiership.

Give Celtic or Rangers one season in the top flight and the money they make from that would transform everything.

They have a pull on par with the big six and would be able to attract the biggest names in world football much quicker than others realise.

This fantasy needs to stop and people need to wake up to the fact that both clubs are happy with where they are.
