Refereeing decisions have been at the heart of many Celtic controversies for decades. Even before the introduction of VAR.

The video referee was supposed to clear up officiating errors in Scottish football but since it was first implemented in 2021, Celtic fans have witnessed big decision go for and against the team.

Well, in the Premier League, they are having the same issues but they plan to tackle their own refereeing problems in a different way and it will resonate with Celtic supporters.

PGMOL modernise referees but it leads to bigger Celtic questions

The PGMOL has seen their own fair share of refereeing and VAR clangers over the years. And they plan to address them by rebranding their organisation.

To be named ‘Pro Ref’, PGMOL are looking to modernise refereeing in an effort to better explain its role in football.

In Scotland, SPFL clubs and Celtic face a similar problem after high-profile incidents last season poured more scrutiny on the SFA referees who are under constant pressure every single weekend.

Celtic should be asking for more transparency from the SFA

Celtic have had VAR and refereeing decisions go for and against them over the years as have other clubs in Scotland.

However, some of the noise surrounding the decisions referee gave the Parkhead club did get ridiculous last season.

If the SFA and Willie Collum look to improve communication with fans, it will improve confidence and will also stop the nonsense we saw being said about Celtic beating Hearts to the title last season.

There is a bigger issue to be addressed here than which club’s receive the most beneficial decisions. It’s about how referees get to those decisions and, if they are wrong, how does the SFA fix it.

The ball is in Collum and the SFA’s court. More transparency and better communication with fans to explain major decisions better would be a far better place to start.
