Sebastian Tounekti is a player who undoubtedly divides opinions among the Celtic supporters.
What can’t be denied is that the Tunisian is a talented player. Not many get 15 caps for their country if they don’t have something about them.
However, Tounekti has at times flattered to deceive at Celtic and at this summer’s World Cup, he didn’t have the best of times as Tunisia were knocked out at the preliminary group stage after scoring just two goals but conceding 12.
The Celtic winger managed just 83 minutes over three games at the World Cup as former Rangers man Bilel Mohsni launched a furious defence of his fellow countryman.
Does Sebastian Tounekti have a future beyond this season at Celtic?
Celtic star Tounekti ‘didn’t have a chance’ at the World Cup
Tounekti’s defence from a former Rangers player just shows how highly rated he is by his fellow professionals as Mohsni absolved the Celtic winger from Tunisia’s ‘disastrous’ World Cup campaign.
Mohsni told The Courier, “It was a disastrous World Cup campaign.
“Tounekti wasn’t able to do much. Obviously, I rate him highly, but he didn’t really have a chance.
“You can’t blame him. It was his first World Cup tournament, but nothing went right in those three group games.
“For a forward like Tounekti, it must have been even more frustrating. What can you do when it is like this?”
Sebastian Tounekti must produce next season at Celtic
Tounekti has been a source of frustration for Celtic supporters. At times, the winger delivers glimpses of the player that convinced the club to shell out millions to Hammarby for him.
But on other occasions he can look like a rabbit caught in headlights. Martin O’Neill got some good performances from Tounekti towards the tail end of last season to help clinch a league and cup double.
Let’s get completely honest here. Tunisia’s World Cup was a complete nightmare. Sacking their manager after just one game proved that. Tounekti has, rightly, been defended from that.
However, with a new season just around the corner, Tounekti will need to put his World Cup pain behind him and prove to the Celtic fans that he deserves to be a mainstay in the starting XI next season.
Because with Rangers and Hearts strengthening, Celtic will not get away with another poor campaign like they did last season even with O’Neill still at the helm.
