Four players Celtic would be better off cashing in on than Benjamin Nygren

Benjamin Nygren is one of Celtic’s most talked-about players at the moment.

In fact, the talk in his homeland is that a Premier League move could be in the offing this summer.

As Celtic’s leading goalscorer by far, Nygren has enjoyed a stellar debut season. Without his goals, Martin O’Neill’s side may have currently been well adrift in the title race.

The summer of 2026 is bound to be one of plenty of change at Celtic Park, with players moving both in and out – here are four sales that would make much more sense than Nygren.

Should Martin O'Neill be focusing the team around him so that he scores even more goals?

Celtic sales that would make more sense than Benjamin Nygren

Arne Engels

Arne Engels may play a very different role in Celtic’s midfield compared to Nygren, but unlike the Swede, he is known to have concrete interest from the Premier League.

Nottingham Forest had a £25 million bid rejected for Engels on Deadline Day in January. The Hoops simply weren’t in a position to sell, despite the financially favourable terms of the move.

Given that RB Leipzig are reportedly also fans of Engels, the Belgian is clearly in a moment of peak value, given football’s current fixation on set-pieces. Even if it doesn’t match the Forest offer, a sale in the summer would make sense for all parties.

Daizen Maeda

Just days after the closure of Celtic’s last summer transfer window, with plenty of criticism of the club’s hierarchy already flying around, Daizen Maeda revealed he had wanted to leave Celtic.

Along with the bombshell revelation made by Maeda during international duty with Japan, the forward also voiced his commitment to Celtic until the end of the season. However, he is currently on the longest goalless run of his Parkhead career.

This, coupled with Daizen’s current age of 28, makes it feel like it’s now or never for a big European move. This summer’s World Cup could be the perfect stage to maximise his value.

Cameron Carter-Vickers

Now for a controversial one. Cameron Carter-Vickers has captained Celtic on many occasions, and has largely been a reliable presence across his five years and 172 appearances.

But the 28-year-old currently has an Achilles tendon injury, having missed increasingly more games with every season. As an indirect result, he now has more competition for his position than ever before at Celtic.

There is no denying Carter-Vickers’ importance to the side when fit, but to simply prove a point: he is currently more sellable and replaceable than Nygren.

Reo Hatate

Hatate is now over four years into his Celtic career – and in that period, he has shown glimpses of both elite quality and maddening sloppiness.

Some in the support may be out of patience with the midfielder, but just when fans start to write him off, he makes an excellent cameo at Ibrox like he did in the 2-2 Premiership draw last weekend.

A player with this ability will still absolutely have value, but with Hatate not as important to the squad as he has been in the past, a summer sale would make plenty of sense.
