Calum Ward has been a standout player in the Scottish Premiership and a key reason behind Motherwell’s success. But is he ready to make the step up to Celtic?

Ward has been linked with the Hoops after managing to keep 17 clean sheets from 33 league games this season.

With Jens Berthel Askou also linked to the Bhoys, there is a world where he could bring Ward to Parkhead with him, and the Dane’s comments suggest that he is capable of wearing the Hoops shirt.

The 2026 transfer window is still months away, but what is the number one position Celtic need to improve this summer?📝

Jens Berthel Askou has faith in Calum Ward

Askou has repeatedly highlighted Ward’s fantastic progression since the summer, framing his development as both rapid and deliberate.

The goalkeeper signed a new contract with the Steelemen in December 2025 and Askou was full of praise, saying to the club website: “He has all the qualities we are looking for in a goalkeeper, and on top of that, he is extremely passionate about learning and improving.

“His quality and composure in the build-up have been of massive importance to us, and lately he has had more and more decisive moments denying big chances for the opposition.”

Calum Ward won’t come cheaply

Motherwell are expecting a barrage of bids for their key players this summer, with at least three of them linked to the Hoops.

Elijah Just and Tawanda Maswanhise are also being tipped for moves to Parkhead but the most expensive of all may be Ward.

Drafted in the midst of a goalkeeping crisis in February 2025, he has established himself as a proven shot-stopper in this division and his new contract has seen his valuation increase. That will only make Motherwell dig their heels in and ask for more.
