Kevin Nolan’s Glasgow Derby admission shows why Celtic still command respect

Kevin Nolan’s recent comments about Celtic should remind people exactly how the club is viewed inside football circles.

Too often, Scottish football is dismissed from the outside. Nolan’s admission showed the opposite. He understood the pressure attached to Celtic and the demands that come with pulling on that shirt.

And when asked about ever being approached by a Scottish club during his playing career, Nolan’s admission shows how highly thought of Celtic are.

Celtic fans, what was your immediate reaction when you saw John Beaton and Andrew Dallas named for Fir Park?

Kevin Nolan knew exactly what Celtic would demand

Speaking about a potential move to Parkhead during his playing career, Nolan admitted Celtic did approach him after his West Ham exit.

He said: “No I didn’t and that surprised me, I think there were a few initial talks when I came away from West Ham to Celtic, but nothing materialised.

“I would have enjoyed going up there because of the ferociousness of the derby and being tested by everyone.”

The important part of that quote is not the transfer itself. It is the way Nolan described the challenge.

He did not talk about trophies or reputation. He talked about pressure. He talked about scrutiny. He talked about being tested.

That is the reality of playing for Celtic. Every performance is analysed. Every dropped point becomes a story. Many players struggle with that expectation.

Nolan clearly appreciated it.

The Glasgow Derby still commands huge respect

Nolan’s reference to the “ferociousness of the derby” also matters because it reflects how the fixture is still viewed beyond Scotland.

The Glasgow Derby remains one of football’s most emotionally demanding matches. The intensity around the fixture is impossible to fake and experienced professionals recognise that immediately.

That is why comments like Nolan’s stand out. He was not romanticising Celtic from a distance. He was acknowledging the weight that comes with representing the club.

For all the lazy dismissals Scottish football still receives in some quarters of English football, people inside the game continue to understand exactly what Celtic represents.
