Kyogo Furuhashi injury puts focus on Celtic stars who faded after leaving

Kyogo Furuhashi’s post-Celtic nightmare has gone from bad to worse as he was ruled out for the season through injury.

Furuhashi has endured a dreadful season at Birmingham City and Chris Davies confirmed that he won’t kick a ball again this year after their loss against Blackburn Rovers.

Celtic failed to re-sign Kyogo in the January transfer window, which is probably a blessing, but it has proved that leaving the Bhoys doesn’t always guarantee a better career. With that, 67 Hail Hail has picked out five players that failed to make the same sort of impact after leaving Parkhead.

Poll: Which Celtic player do you regret the club selling?

Moussa Dembele

Moussa Dembele looked like a future elite striker during his time at Celtic, scoring 51 goals in 94 appearances and dominating domestically.

Dembele’s move to Lyon in 2018 still brought decent numbers, but he never made the jump into Europe’s top tier despite repeated links to major clubs.

Injuries and inconsistency stalled his trajectory, and later moves confirmed he never reached the same level he showed in Glasgow, with him now playing in the Saudi Pro League and coming up against Brendan Rodgers.

Gary Hooper

Gary Hooper was one of Celtic’s most reliable finishers in the modern era, scoring 82 goals in 138 appearances and delivering consistently in big games.

Hooper signed for Norwich City and it looked like it would be a natural progression, but he struggled to adapt to the Premier League’s pace and physicality.

After that, his career drifted across the Championship and overseas, without ever rediscovering the clinical edge he showed at Celtic.

Stefan Johansen

Stefan Johansen was often trusted to captain Celtic when Scott Brown was absent and was a key figure during a dominant domestic period, winning Player of the Year in 2015.

His move to Fulham brought a decent spell in the Championship, but he never established himself as a standout player at a higher level.

Johansen’s influence gradually declined, and he spent later years moving between clubs without matching his authority or output at Celtic.

Fraser Forster

Fraser Forster was outstanding during his two spells at Celtic, particularly in European competition, where he produced a string of elite performances.

Forster’s move to Southampton brought mixed results, with periods as a starter but also long stretches out of the team.

Despite returning briefly to Celtic on loan and showing his quality again, he never fully established himself as a top Premier League goalkeeper over the long term and is now only a backup goalkeeper for midtable top flight sides.

Scott Sinclair

Scott Sinclair enjoyed a sensational spell at Celtic, particularly in his debut season where he scored 25 goals and collected multiple individual awards.

The winger’s move away from the club saw a sharp drop in output, with spells at Preston North End and Bristol Rovers failing to replicate anything close to his Celtic form, showing that he was in the latter stages of his career.

Sinclair is now happily retired and still a fan favourite with the Hoops after proving to be one of Rodgers’ best signings.
