Lewis Morgan earns pointless Scotland call-up

Lewis Morgan earned perhaps one of the most pointless international call-ups in history on Sunday as Steve Clarke added him to his squad for the meaningless victory over minnows San Marino.

The Celtic winger replaced Robert Snodgrass just hours before the 6-0 thrashing of the world’s lowest ranked side. Morgan may have leapt at the opportunity to add to his two international caps but he had to settle for a place on the bench as his teammates rattled in the goals.

And as he returns back to training with Celtic ahead of more likely time spent on the bench, he may just wonder what the point in his call-up was.

Morgan is out of the Scotland picture too

Scotland boss Clarke obviously required back-up following Snodgrass’ withdrawal and Morgan was probably an obvious option. The 23-year-old has been part of several international camps before and is familiar with a lot of the players from club duty.

Time constraints also probably meant that Morgan was a sensible choice. The winger is based in the Glasgow area and could get to Hampden pretty easily in comparison to a player based up north or down south.

Morgan may just have been pleased to receive some sort of affection from somebody. The former St. Mirren man was one of Neil Lennon’s favoured men in the early part of the season but he perhaps failed to repay the Northern Irishman in solid performances.

Since his goal against Swedish side AIK he has been seen just once – playing the entirety of the cup success against Partick Thistle. The arrival of Mohamed Elyounoussi and apparent return of Scott Sinclair signal that Morgan is now fifth in the order of left-wingers.

Quite simply, his days at the club are numbered.
