Now’s not the time to forget the truth about Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic

It’s easy to batter into Celtic after yesterday’s performance away to Hibernian. Certainly, there is a valid criticism to be laid at the feet of Ange Postecoglou and his team. It wasn’t good enough and we need better in the coming weeks.

However, I do think we need to get some perspective about this squad, where it’s come from and where it’s likely going.

When Celtic were defeated 1-0 by Livingston all the way back in September who predicted they wouldn’t lose a single Scottish Premiership match until at least March? Because that’s where we are now and the streak continues.

Yes, there have been frustrating 0-0 draws along the way, including yesterday’s, but Postecoglou’s team have been literally unbeatable in domestic football since those opening three defeats in six matches.

Heading into the last ten games of the season we sit three points clear and who’d bet we’ll have a worse record than Rangers between now and May? Certainly not me.

There’s been quite a lot of frustration aired about yesterday’s result and while it’s understandable, I think it’d be a mistake for the support at large to forget the big picture and get bogged down in details of minor problems in the team.

Yes, we can obsess over that footage of the poor passage of play between Joe Hart, Carl Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers all we like, or pick on Tom Rogic and Jota for having bad games, but I think it just feeds into a narrative that Celtic are not still firmly in control of their title destiny.

We’re actually title favourites.

Results like yesterday’s don’t warrant an inquest or us making final judgements on players who, for the most part, have exceeded expectations this season.

A league title win this year was always a tall order given the state of the club when Postecoglou walked in the door. I didn’t think we’d be on the verge of it already. But we are and it’s not time to lose the head whether that be players, coaches or the fans.

There are ten games to go, 30 points to play for and a lot of twists and turns left. It will require a strong stomach from all of us but if Celtic can stay the course they’ve been on, we’ll all be smiling at the end of the season.

Now, more than ever, Postecoglou and his team have to be backed to the hilt.
