Path is now clear for Ange Postecoglou to make key Celtic squad addition
Heading into this summer’s transfer window, there would have been several areas Ange Postecoglou was looking to target.
So far, the Celtic manager has added a new goalkeeper and secured the permanent services of a key central defender from last season.
However, there is still plenty on Postecoglou’s transfer to-do list, with the 56-year-old looking to make improvements across his squad.
There appears to be one position in particular that the former Socceroos boss will be targeting next, based on the Hoops’ latest transfer developments – a new central defender.
Across the last few weeks, the Bhoys have also allowed potential defensive back-ups to depart, with Nir Bitton moving on to new challenges elsewhere and Liam Scales heading to Aberdeen on loan.
Despite the fact all three players did not earn much game time in the Celtic back four last season, their exits still leave Postecoglou slightly short on options at centre-back.
The duo of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt were consistently part of the side last campaign. However, should either player pick up an injury, the only senior back-up at this point would be Stephen Welsh.
Celtic do have some talented defenders currently coming through the academy, with both Bosun Lawal and Dane Murray progressing well.
But, automatically making them the fourth choice option might be a challenging task for the young duo at this stage of their career.
Celtic’s hunt for a new defender has already been apparent this window after it was stated that the club has been monitoring the likes of Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Ko Itakura.
The urgency in Celtic’s hunt for a new centre-back may be about to step up, and we are likely to see more links to different options over the next few weeks.
After making just one appearance for the Hoops last season, it seems likely that Jullien was never going to be in Postecoglou’s plans for the coming year and is the reason why he has okayed the move so early in the window.
Should the Frenchman complete his move to Germany, it has cleared the path for Postecoglou to make his move to bring in another defender, and I am sure he will have a few tricks up his sleeve as he prepares to delve into the market.
