Celtic’s Stephen Welsh was thrown in at the deep end for the Hoops this week. After not playing for the team since February, circumstances led to him starting in two of the biggest games of the season, against Rangers and Milan.
Welsh was one of Celtic’s better performers in the 2-0 defeat to Rangers, but he had a difficult night against Milan, and was taken off at half-time in the 3-1 loss to Milan, as he seemed to struggle with the occasion.
Put into team in difficult circumstances
However, Welsh shouldn’t be too down about how he played in the games. He was put into two huge games in difficult circumstances, as Celtic battled with Covid-19 and injury.
In fact, he should be proud of how he played, especially against Rangers. On a day when few Celtic players had pass marks, Welsh didn’t let the side down in a game which could have seen him go to pieces. He stuck to what he had to do, and did the job well.
Perhaps the most notable aspect of Welsh coming into the side is that it shows that the manager has faith in the player.
Manager believed player could handle occasions
Celtic might have had injury problems, but that didn’t stop Lennon from giving the player a chance against Rangers. If he didn’t think that he performed well in that game, he wouldn’t have started him against Milan either.

All young players struggle at times. Even Kieran Tierney did at the start of his Celtic career. However, Welsh has nothing to be ashamed of at being taken off at half-time against Milan.
He will only be disappointed that the Hoops didn’t get good results in either game. Although he can’t be blamed for that, the team didn’t play well overall.
Welsh seems to have a bright future at Celtic though. Hopefully he takes pride from how he performed against Rangers and Milan.
In other news, some Celtic fans have responded to a Jeremie Frimpong Tweet.
