The Ben Siegrist situation is a mystery but his Celtic hopes don't look good

Celtic goalkeeper Ben Siegrist has dropped completely out of the reckoning in the first four months of 2023.

Siegrist signed a four-year deal with Celtic last summer and was widely understood to be Joe Hart’s understudy.

The Swiss shot-stopper made some early appearances for the club, starting the League Cup wins over Ross County and Motherwell.

He also played in a number of friendly matches, including in Australia, and was part of every matchday squad until the New Year.

But since the start of 2023, Siegrist hasn’t made one single matchday squad with Scott Bain instead on the bench.

That’s 17 games in a row that he’s been forced to watch from the stand. It’s a pretty puzzling situation.

Who knows what has gone on in the background, but something seems to be up.

Has there been a falling out with Ange Postecoglou? We can only speculate.

Siegrist was suffering from a calf injury in January, but is understood to be fit now, but still missing out on any action.

You have to say that his Celtic hopes don’t look particularly good. Given that he still has three years to run on his contract after this campaign, it will be interesting to see what action Celtic will take.

At 31, he may well be keen for more regular game time than we can offer.

It’s one to keep an eye on this summer.
