The deadline Celtic must set themselves to appoint a new manager

Celtic will have to face the task of appointing a new manager this summer, but it needs to be done sooner rather than later.

Martin O’Neill will step away from his duties as interim manager at the end of the season, opening the door for someone new to come in and take the helm.

In recent months we have seen names like Robbie Keane linked with the Hoops, while Jens Berthel Askou has been a popular figure among Hoops fans.

Getting something as important as this right is vital for the club’s future, but this needs to be done sooner rather than later.

Celtic must appoint new manager before the start of the World Cup

It is going to be a huge task for anyone walking through the Parkhead gates to manage Celtic.

A huge squad rebuild awaits them as key players like Daizen Maeda look set to leave, and an injection of fresh faces is required.

The more Celtic wait around, the more it delays that process. With the World Cup starting on Thursday 19 June, the club’s board must pencil that date in as the deadline to have a new manager in place.

If the Bhoys beat St Mirren in the Scottish Cup semi-final this weekend, that will mean their season comes to an end on Saturday 23 May, after the cup final.

Celtic should already know who their primary candidate is internally, and the moment their campaign finishes, should be on the phone to complete the deal.

Celtic can’t afford to waste time

We know that time is a precious game in football and the longer the club leave things, the more likely they miss out.

Their decision to delay and wait has cost them in the transfer window on several occasions and managerial targets could be snapped up, or convinced to stay by their current clubs if the Hoops aren’t quick enough.

Agree or disagree?

After the disaster of the 2025/26 season, it is about time that Celtic prove they are being proactive rather than waiting for something to come to them.
