There’s been another absurd overreaction as the usual suspects struggle with Celtic success

Is anyone expecting Scottish FA head of refereeing Crawford Allan to make an appearance on national radio shortly?

That’s the way this week is going if you take a glance at some of the media reactions to last night’s Celtic win over Aberdeen.

You’d think Celtic have been the beneficiaries of a blatant offside call. No, Liel Abada wasn’t beyond the last defender. No, he didn’t unfairly block an opponent.

Part of the outcry has been led by the Dons of course, with Stephen Glass hilariously fuming after the match.

The truth is Celtic’s third goal at Pittodrie was a fair one and very well taken by Jota. Just like Kyogo Furuhashi’s goal at home to Hearts, if there is anything to gripe about, it’s so marginal as to need VAR to sort it all out.

Like the fall-out of that Hearts game, the amount of time dedicated to all this is absurd. For it to dominate the conversations in Scottish football media today, from newspapers to phone-ins is a failure.

Ange Postecoglou’s team have just made it 20-games unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership. Reaching that milestone from the state Celtic were in just six months ago is a fantastic achievement.

Let’s be honest, did anyone expect it after losing three of the first six league games of the season? Nobody did.

Yet the reception to it is an almost constant undermining of Celtic and the direction of travel, led by over-analysis of marginal decisions. It’s tiring.

I understand some Celtic fans will regard it as a bias. A way to appease Rangers supporters who suddenly find themselves a point behind in the title race.

For me, it’s just evidence of a very Scottish mentality of focusing on the negatives and failing to recognise the positives. It’s easier to talk something down and focus on controversy than just giving people their due.

I’m not expecting neutral observers to be cheerleaders. There’s a reason fan media exists. However, I’m also growing weary of the constant microscope, the bad faith arguments and the hysteria.

Can we not take stock and recognise Celtic are on an incredible run? Can we not delve into the point proven by going on the road to consolidate last week’s derby victory?

It seems not. Abada was offside, they’ll tell you, that’s all that matters. Except he wasn’t and the inconvenient truth for everyone else is that Celtic march on.

In other news, “Ange has backed him”; Scott McDonald hails improvement in oft-criticised Celtic star.
