As the season draws to it’s close, there is still plenty for Celtic to play for as the league and Scottish Cup remain up for grabs.
For the fans though, it has been a bit of an up-and-down season. Watching the team struggle for form has been difficult and it is also proving hard to pick who we think could be named Celtic’s Player of the Season.
Cameron Carter-Vickers‘ injury situation has meant he would be a difficult call and Kyogo Furuhashi‘s lack of goals probably rules him out.
Even so, here are three players rated by Fotmob, who are all genuine contenders for Celtic’s Player of the Season.
Matt O’Riley’s topsy-turvy Celtic season
Rated at 8.0, Matt O’Riley has won Celtic’s man-of-the-match award on nine different occasions this season. The Danish international is the Hoops’ highest-rated player on the football site so here are his most impressive stats:
- Goals: 11
- Assists: 10
- Chances created: 68
- Shots on target: 30
- Passing Accuracy: 83.1%
- Duels won: 174
- Tackle success rate: 51%
- Ball recoveries: 180
O’Riley has made 39 appearances for Celtic both domestically and on the European scene missing only the 3-0 win over Ross County back in November last year.
The 23-year-old had a superb start to the season as he impressed in the Champions League making three assists but his form did take a small dip at the turn of the year.
Now back on form, O’Riley has contributed three assists and a goal in his last three outings as he kept Celtic’s league title dream alive.
Liam Scales is Celtic’s surprise package
Rated at 7.82, Liam Scales has been an outstanding success story at Celtic this season. Coming in from the cold, it looked like the Irishman was on his way out of Celtic.
But after stepping up in the midst of a defensive injury crisis, Scales impressed and has barely put a foot wrong all season. Here as his stats in detail:
- Passing accuracy: 88.6%
- Assists: 2
- Chances created: 17
- Duels won: 382
- Tackle success rate: 64.3%
- Ball recoveries: 169
- Chances blocked: 7
- Dispossessed: 4
Making 36 appearances this season, Scales has been an ever-present in Brendan Rodgers‘ side. The Republic of Ireland international has missed just four games this season and it currently injured at the moment.

Despite not featuring for Celtic before this season, Scales has stepped up on both the domestic and European scene and has not looked out of place in the Champions League. He even grabbed an assist in the 2-1 win over Feyenoord. [Transfermarkt]
Despite having weaknesses in his game, no Celtic fan can deny that Scales has had a great season for the Hoops.
Callum McGregor: Celtic’s Captain Fantastic
To be honest, it’s no real surprise Callum McGregor is in the running. Rated 7.77, The Celtic captain has been imperious this season and had it not been for injury, he was on course to have played in all but one of Celtic’s fixtures this season.
As always, McGregor is at the heart of the Celtic midfield and how we play and the reason why Celtic have been so successful. Here are his stats for the season:
- Goals: 2
- Assists: 5
- Chances created: 44
- Shots on target: 8
- Passing accuracy: 91.8%
- Duels won: 111
- Tackle success rate: 62.2%
- Ball recoveries: 203

Before he picked up his recent injury, McGregor had played in all but one of Celtic’s fixtures this season. Dominant in the heart of the midfield, the captain is the driving force that kept the team going in the Champions League and domestically.
Surprisingly, the skipper has only won the man of the match once this season. With no real weaknesses in his game, McGregor is, as always, a worthy contender for this award.
So these are the three standouts in Celtic’s season so far and every one of them deserves to be up there when the votes are cast for the end-of-season award.
