Why did Don Robertson fail to red card Dujon Sterling and Tuur Rommens vs Celtic?

The Glasgow Derby Scottish Cup clash between Rangers and Celtic passed with relatively no VAR or match officials controversy for a change, despite the controversy after the penalty shoot-out.

However, there were more than two opportunities where Rangers duo Dujon Sterling and Tuur Rommens should have seen red against Celtic.

Rommens entered the referee’s book in the 54th minute and Sterling joined him in the 67th minute, as both Rangers players walked a tightrope for the rest of the Scottish Cup tie.

However, referee Don Robertson failed to apply the rules after both Rangers players persistently fouled Celtic

Who was your Celtic man of the match against Rangers?

When Dujon Sterling should have been ordered off vs Celtic

Sterling’s 67th-minute yellow card should have been upgraded to a red after a foul on the 83rd minute after the Rangers defender clattered into Celtic winger Joel Mvuka.

The tackle was the latest in a long line of persistent fouling committed by Sterling who, under IFAB’s guidelines for persistent misconduct, warranted a second caution.

The left-back was taken off just before the first half of extra time, presumably because Danny Rohl could see he was walking a tightrope inside Ibrox.

Robertson should have been tougher with Sterling after the Rangers star committed foul after foul without punishment, which is probably why Tuur Rommens was allowed to stay on the pitch.

Tuur Rommens was lucky to stay on the park vs Celtic

Rommens was another Rangers player lucky to stay on the pitch in a tough Scottish Cup tie against Celtic.

The Belgian left-back was being hounded by Celtic winger Hyunjun Yang but after a number of fouls after his booking, Rommens still remained on the park.

In an afternoon where a tepid Glasgow Derby played out despite the Ibrox scenes at the end, Rangers can find themselves lucky to have ended the game with eleven players on the park.
