Since the turn of the century, you could argue that one of the best signings Celtic made was under Gordon Strachan.

The legendary Celtic manager knocked on the door of Hibernian in 2007 and signed the no-nonsense midfielder Scott Brown.

The rest is history with the former Celtic skipper, who, on top of his countless trophies in Glasgow, also won the League Cup with Hibs in 2007.

One man who shared a dressing room with Brown and was also a success in Edinburgh was former striker Steven Fletcher, and he also wanted to take the same path as Brown.

Steven Fletcher on wanting to sign for Celtic

Fletcher forged a strong career, including playing for various English clubs, as well as in France, and most recently helping Wrexham earn promotion to the English Championship.

Speaking on the Warm Up about his career, the 38-year-old explained how he wanted to join Celtic from Hibs, including how ‘Strachan tried to sign me.’

Fletcher was open to leaving in the January transfer window, but he shared what stopped it all from happening.

“I will openly admit, when I was at Hibs, I wanted to sign for Celtic,” said Fletcher. “100%. Aye, (I had a bid). It was in the January, Strachan tried to sign me in the January, and they wouldn’t let me go.

“And then I wanted to go in the summer.”

Before Chris Sutton, who didn’t have a great relationship with Strachan, added: “You did well to avoid that.”

Fletcher’s career in numbers

After starting his career at Hibernian, Fletcher proceeded to play for nine clubs, including earning 33 Scotland caps along the way.

The biggest light on the hard-hitting striker’s career is helping Wrexham, with the backing of Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, earn their third straight promotion last season.

But when it comes to the size of club, Fletcher probably didn’t play for a side bigger than French giants, Marseille, with the likes of Sunderland, Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday also on his CV.
