Celtic and Lanus have reached a ‘verbal agreement’ for the transfer of left-back Alexandro Bernabei, journalist Cesar Luis Merlo has reported on Twitter this afternoon.

Celtic’s interest in Bernabei has been well reported over the last couple of weeks with outlets such as Sky Sports reporting we had an official offer for the player rejected.

Now, it’s looking good.

Merlo stated on Twitter: “There is verbal agreement for Alexander Bernabei to go to Celtic in Scotland. Lanús is exchanging documentation for an operation that is carried out for 90% of the economic rights.”

Essentially this means Celtic look to have agreed on a fee for the player, with the Argentinian top-flight side retaining a 10% sell-on clause, as is common in most transfers these days.

This is an exciting development that could see the player make his move to Scotland sooner rather than later.

The 21-year-old played in Lanus’ league fixture against Colon at the weekend but got sent off after headbutting an opponent.

He had previously missed three successive matches after a trip to Europe to sort out some personal passport details.

He’s made 84 senior appearances in total for Lanus, scoring four times and assisting on ten occasions.

Video clips and analysis shows he is a livewire, attack-minded full-back who can be a weapon in the opposition half.

Celtic need left-back competition for Greg Taylor, especially after the exit of Liam Scales to Aberdeen on loan this afternoon.

In fact, that deal going through could signify that Celtic are also increasingly confident of getting the deal done for Bernabei.

We await more promising signing updates across the coming week with deals for Jota and Benjamin Siegrist also reported to be close.

The summer is heating up!
