Liam Scales has joined Aberdeen on a season-long loan from Celtic and will be used at Pittodrie as a left-sided centre-back.

Scales was predominately utilised as a left-back at the Bhoys during his debut campaign at the club, though has featured as a central defender at his previous side Shamrock Rovers.

Dons boss Jim Goodwin has confirmed he’ll be used more centrally in the new season ahead, explaining to the club’s official website that he’s been tracking the player for a number of years.

Goodwin said: “I watched him very closely during his time at Shamrock Rovers, unfortunately I couldn’t get a deal done.

“Liam is 23-years-old and has already amassed nearly 200 appearances in senior football. He’s a strong character with a winning mentality, who will no doubt be a great addition to the squad.

“He is coming in as a left-sided centre half, which is the position I saw him play regularly for Shamrock Rovers, and the one we believe is his best position.

“He is aggressive, mobile, very comfortable on the ball and he has all the qualities you would want in a modern-day centre-back.”

Scales is contracted to the Bhoys until 2025, so if he impresses up north, there’s plenty of time for him to make a name for himself at Celtic in future years.

It became clear throughout the season he isn’t the kind of full-back we need in Ange Postecoglou’s system, but perhaps a rebirth as a central defender can help him one day have a future at Celtic.

Everyone will certainly be tracking his progress at Aberdeen closely. This could be the kind of move that really helps his development similar to Kristoffer Ajer’s loan switch to Kilmarnock and Ryan Christie’s move to the Dons.

Good luck Liam!
