Ange Postecoglou was asked about the exit of striker Albian Ajeti this evening, after his move on loan to Sturm Graz was confirmed by Celtic.

Ajeti has made the switch to Austria on a season-long loan, with the UEFA Europa League outfit having the option to buy him at the end of the season.

The Swiss forward made 17 appearances under Postecoglou last season, mostly due to injury and depth issues. It quickly became clear he wouldn’t have a long-term future under the Australian.

Asked about the deal on Radio Scotland before tonight’s match vs Ross County [19:12], Postecoglou said: “Albian was probably one of a number of players who got caught in between periods.

“They came in at a really difficult time for the club, through the Covid experience as well. I can just imagine it would have been very hard for new players to settle in that time. Then I come along, and we changed direction again.

“Albian’s a good player. He just needs an opportunity. My role in that is just to make sure they have an opportunity to play their football. Just because they don’t fit in here, doesn’t mean they can’t have a really strong career somewhere else.”

Getting a portion of Ajeti’s wage off the Celtic books should be seen as a positive. He was a significant earner at the club and was never going to feature much this season.

It’s not ideal he’s only away on the loan, but if he impresses, hopefully it convinces the Austrians to take him off our hands for good.

It just never worked out for the former West Ham and Basel man in Glasgow, but better times could be ahead of him this term and no-one would begrudge him that.
