Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou admitted outgoings are more likely than incoming transfers in the final few days of the transfer window but has wryly refused to rule out a final crowd-pleasing deal.
The Bhoys have already signed Yuki Kobayashi, Alistair Johnston, Tomoki Iwata and Hyeongyu Oh in January, bolstering the squad for this season’s trophy push.
Josip Juranovic and Moritz Jenz have gone in the opposite direction with the potential for more exits strong, specifically Giorgos Giakoumakis.
Asked if he was done adding to his group, Postecoglou said in a media conference today [Celtic FC]: “I could say yes but then it would be boring for the next few days for all of us so I’ll just say we’ll stay agile and see what happens.”
Later, when asked about departures, the Celtic boss responded: “There are still a few days in the window to go and there is some scope for potential movement and more likely out than in. That will all transpire over the next few days.
“With all these things it is about making sure the player gets what he wants, we are satisfied as a club and the club that they want to go to is satisfied. It needs all three parties to come to an agreement and if that happens then as we’ve seen with Josip [Juranovic] and Moritz [Jenz] we’ll get the deals done. There is nothing definite at the moment.”
At this stage, it feels like anything incoming would be opportunistic on Celtic’s part. You just don’t know what can pop up on the market in the final few days of a window that the club may be able to take advantage of.
Realistically though, I think we can be happy if work is indeed done. If Giakoumakis leaves there could be an argument for a third striker but with Daizen Maeda and Sead Haksabanovic having versatility in that regard, it wouldn’t be urgent.
Some solid squad building has again been completed. Now we can watch the progress of this group in the closing stages of the season before more decisions are made this summer.
