A lot of focus during the January transfer window has been on Celtic’s attack.

But another area of concern has been at the heart of defence, with Celtic having to recall Stephen Welsh from his Motherwell loan spell.

Despite Welsh’s success with Motherwell, he finds himself as the fourth choice behind Auston Trusty, Liam Scales, and Dane Murray at Parkhead.

That was proven during Celtic’s win over Falkirk on Sunday, when Murray started in Trusty’s absence, as Anthony Joseph shared that Welsh could return to Motherwell on transfer deadline day.

Celtic searching for a centre-back on transfer deadline day

Even though Celtic have known about Cameron Carter-Vickers’ long-term injury for months and months now, nothing has been sorted regarding the centre-back spot.

But with the clock ticking down before the January transfer window slams shut, it seems as though the powers that be are ‘still looking to bring in a centre-back.’

Joseph shared on social media that if the champions of Scotland can bring in a new face, then it will open the door for Welsh to return to Motherwell.

‘UPDATE: Celtic are still looking to bring in a centre-back before tomorrow’s transfer deadline,’ wrote Joseph.

‘If they can make a breakthrough with a centre-back target, it could pave the way for Stephen Welsh to rejoin Motherwell. The Hoops recalled Welsh from his loan at Well last month.’

Welsh is better off at Motherwell

Motherwell are playing some of the best football in the country. Welsh was a key player behind that.

Yet Jens Berthel Askou is watching a player he has helped progress so much sit behind Murray in the Celtic pecking order.

This isn’t helping anyone’s cause, and it would be better for all parties if the Hoops can get that centre-back in, so Welsh can continue to progress his career at Fir Park.
