Celtic are likely to complete a deal to sign Paulo Bernardo within ‘a matter of hours’ according to Brendan Rodgers.

We discussed earlier this week how terms with the Portuguese midfielder had been agreed as Celtic looked to match the salary Bernardo was getting at Benfica.

The Hoops boss was speaking to Sky Sports this afternoon and was quizzed about potential Celtic incomings and said that whilst the deal is near to being completed for Bernardo, there is still work to be done in the transfer window.

Rodgers said [Sky Sports], “Hopefully it’s a matter of hours, he’s due to have a medical so hopefully all goes well with that.

“But we still have work to do, in transfers there’s lots of moving parts. It’s never as easy as seeing a player and bringing him in.”

Hopefully, the deal to sign Paulo Bernardo will trigger more transfer incomings at the club as with the new season kick off just over four days away, the Celtic support will be itching to see new faces being brought into the club.

Rodgers fully focused on strengthening Celtic

If the deal to sign Bernardo is completed today, that would mark Rodgers’ third summer transfer capture after sealing deals for Viljami Sinisalo and Kasper Schmeichel just before the US Tour.

And whilst confidence is high that more players will follow, Rodgers reiterated his message to the Celtic fans of where he expects his team to be before the end of the transfer window.

Rodgers continued, “We’d hope by the end of August that we would have the team supported how we’d want. It’s so important, you cannot snooze in this game of football.

“You have to develop and improve and we want to ensure we have an improved squad for this season in order to take on all the challenges we have.”

With talk of Adam Idah looking to join Celtic in the near future, there is every chance that the Republic of Ireland international could be Rodgers’ fourth permanent signing this summer.

With just over four weeks of the window to go, the Celtic manager looked calm and relaxed and seemed confident that he will have the players he wants to help the Hoops defend their title and launch an assault on the upcoming Champions League campaign.
