Celtic defender, Carl Sarfelt, is reportedly a transfer target for Russian Premier League side, Spartak Moscow.

Football Scotland claims that an offer is being prepared for the Swedish defender as they look to add experience to their backline for the coming season.

The report also says that Celtic could expect an offer for the 28-year-old defender ‘in the coming days’ as the club gets set to announce Polish defender, Maik Nawrocki as another addition to the squad this summer.

Starfelt has been an integral cog in the Celtic defence over the last two seasons. Despite an initial difficult debut against Hearts at the beginning of the 2021/22 season, the Swedish international has forged an impressive defensive partnership with Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Since his £4m move from Rubin Kazan [BBC], Starfelt has helped Celtic to sweep up five trophies out of six in Scotland, which includes the record-breaking eighth domestic treble that was sealed at the end of last season.

Despite being unfairly criticised over his time at Celtic, Starfelt has been a rock at the heart of the Celtic defence. The big Swede had to adapt to a new defensive partnership twice towards the end of last season as Cameron Carter-Vickers dropped out of the squad to have surgery on his knee.

Yuki Kobayashi and Tomoki Iwata were tried and tested in the heart of the Celtic defence, and whilst Iwata equipped himself well, Kobayashi struggled to make an impact.

Brendan Rodgers may be reluctant to let the experience of Starfelt leave this summer. Yes, the addition of Nawrocki will be a welcome one, but with the jury still out on Kobayashi and Stephen Welsh looking likely to move on this summer, if Starfelt does go, that would leave us looking vulnerable for strength-in-depth in defensive options.

However, as with all transfer speculation, we will see how this one pans out but it would be fair to argue that not many Celtic fans would welcome the possibility of losing one of their best defenders with new season just around the corner.
