Silas Andersen’s own comments have made it pretty clear why Celtic were never realistically going to win this transfer race.
Celtic were linked with Andersen but the transfer fee was always going to be a big stumbling block for any move or deal to be completed.
The 21-year-old now looks destined for Sporting Lisbon instead after the Portuguese side moved close to a €10m agreement.
Which Celtic player is most likely to leave this summer? 🤷♂️
Hatate? Maeda? Anyone else?
Celtic were always battling Silas Andersen’s preference
Andersen did not leave much room for interpretation when discussing the situation publicly.
He said in the Daily Record, “I didn’t know I would cost that much, but apparently I’m an expensive player! It’s big, very big. It’s a pat on the back for me and 100 per cent I would love a move there.
“I am sure the club will update me after my next match, but it sounds like it could be close.”
Once a player openly admits he wants the move, clubs like Celtic are immediately facing an uphill battle.
Sporting offer one of the strongest development pathways in European football and their recruitment model for Scandinavian talent has become increasingly attractive for emerging players.
That matters when elite young players are deciding their next step.
Celtic interest was real but Hacken held firm
Celtic were right to monitor Andersen because his 2026 form has shown why his reputation is growing quickly.
The Danish midfielder has already produced strong numbers in Sweden this season and Hacken knew his value was rising.
Sporting director Erik Friberg also made it clear the Swedish side were not going to let Andersen leave cheaply.
He said: “Many clubs are interested, but interest alone will not get them anything.”
Talks advancing rapidly with Sporting always looked difficult for Celtic to compete with once the Portuguese side accelerated negotiations.
That does not mean Celtic failed here.
Sometimes a player simply decides another club offers the exact pathway he wants, and Andersen effectively confirmed Celtic’s chances were over the moment Sporting entered the race.
