Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has made no secret of the fact he is looking to cut his overall first-team squad numbers over the next few transfer windows.

Over 30 players are currently on the books at Celtic who would be considered as part of the squad at Lennoxtown.

Rodgers is on the record as saying he would like to see that number closer to 25.

Yosuke Ideguchi made a permanent exit to Vissel Kobe earlier in the month, while Hyeokkyu Kwon made a loan move to St Mirren.

A few more could leave before the end of the transfer window too. Gustaf Lagerbielke is reported to be close to a switch to Italy and, over the last 24 hours, others who have had game time this season have been linked with exits.

David Turnbull and Mikey Johnston could leave Celtic for the Championship

The Daily Record reports that both Norwich City and West Bromwich Albion are looking at Mikey Johnston as a potential option before Thursday.

The winger has made 12 appearances this season after returning from a loan to Portugal but hasn’t been able to cement himself in Rodgers’ plans. It’d make sense for his career to move on, even if just on a loan-to-buy basis.

Sky Sports, meanwhile, have reported today that Cardiff City have made contact regarding a move for David Turnbull.

Talks between the clubs are said to be ongoing with Turnbull’s contract at Celtic expiring at the end of this season.

The midfielder has made 134 appearances for the Bhoys since joining from Motherwell and has talent, most notably a knack for scoring goals, but doesn’t quite have the playing style needed to fit in Celtic’s high-energy midfield.

Moving both on could be an important step in the club taking the plunge on fresh faces that will hopefully improve Rodgers’ squad options.
