Middlesbrough have stepped away from the race for Josh Mulligan as the future of the Celtic-linked Hibs player hangs in the balance.

Mulligan has been attracting a lot of attention after a successful season at Easter Road with West Ham and Celtic eyeing the talented midfielder.

But as the Championship club’s pursuit of Mulligan ends, will Celtic now pursue the player who caught the eye of former manager Brendan Rodgers?

Middlesbrough will not be signing Josh Mulligan this summer, according to journalist Craig Johns, despite having previously looked at the player.

Writing in Gazette Live, Johns says that Mulligan was not even on Middlesbrough’s list of players to purchase this summer despite scouting the Hibs star earlier this summer.

And the most telling part of his report, Johns says that Middlesbrough stepped away from Mulligan as they believe the young midfielder is ‘expected to have far more lucrative options’ coming his way this summer.

Could Josh Mulligan be Celtic bound?

With Middlesbrough out of the picture, does that mean Celtic could be a destination for young Mulligan as the versatile midfielder courts attention from England?

With ‘lucrative options’ being touted for the 23-year-old, that will ultimately set alarm bells ringing for Celtic supporters.

Because looking at how this board has operated over the last few transfer windows, they appear in no mood to offer anything remotely lucrative to tempt players to come to Celtic Park.
