Many of Celtic’s players out on loan in Scotland this season are doing pretty well.
Kyle Ure and Adam Montgomery were getting good minutes before getting injured at Ayr and Livingston respectively, but Stephen Welsh has been the biggest local success story.
Welsh has entered the Scotland conversation with his Motherwell form, establishing himself as a key part of a team performing beyond expectations under Jens Askou.
He had endured a tough few seasons prior to this one, spending time in the wilderness at Celtic before having an indifferent loan spell in Belgium.
But with his form in Lanarkshire impressing so much, a question over his January situation has been answered.
Celtic make decision on Stephen Welsh at Motherwell
Wilfried Nancy has been using Anthony Ralston as a right-sided centre back… it’s hard not to feel like Welsh would be a solid upgrade in that area.
He is also used to a possession-based brand of football, with Motherwell adopting a new way of playing under the Danish boss.

So will Celtic consider recalling him in the winter window? The Daily Record are reporting that they have decided against this.
The report says that Nancy had considered bringing Welsh back to Glasgow, given his impressive form at Fir Park.
But with the Hoops ‘delighted’ with his form with the Steelmen, they have reportedly given him the green light to remain at the club until the end of the season.
This, you would hope, suggests that a right-sided central defender is on the transfer wishlist ahead of January – but this is Celtic we’re talking about, so you never know.
Of course, the Hoops travel to Fir Park to face Motherwell this Tuesday. Welsh will be unavailable against his parent club.
But with Nancy still assessing his new group of players, he has decided against bringing the 25-year-old back to Celtic Park.
Celtic’s Stephen Welsh tipped for Scotland call-up
The Open Goal panel recently discussed the possibility of Welsh getting a call-up for Steve Clarke’s squad.
James McFadden said that Welsh is ‘ready’ to come in, if there are any injuries to Clarke’s existing options.
Welsh is no longer an inexperienced player, with almost 70 Celtic appearances under his belt across six seasons since his debut.
And with the Hoops squad low on homegrown players, he is certainly keeping himself in the thoughts of the Parkhead hierarchy.
