Celtic man named as factor in potential January move for Callum Wilson

Celtic’s pursuit of a striker this winter is well-documented.

With Kelechi Iheanacho struggling for fitness and Johnny Kenny struggling for form, Martin O’Neill has been absolutely clear that he needs a goalscorer.

At one point this week, it looked like Kyogo Furuhashi would be the answer, with reports of an imminent loan move from Birmingham emerging.

O’Neill has since played down the Kyogo rumours, shifting the focus onto other options in that position, one of whom is Callum Wilson.

Chris Sutton tipped the ex-England striker as a ‘gamble’ option, and Alan Stubbs raved about him too – one Scottish journo has now commented on the speculation.

Update on Callum Wilson being linked to Celtic

Wilson has been given a free transfer by West Ham, having only joined them in the summer after leaving Newcastle.

Aged 33, he has nine England caps and two goals – he scored four Premier League goals for the Hammers this season before being bombed out by new boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

He has been linked with clubs in the Championship and Saudi Pro League – but a move to Celtic just seems too obvious not to be plausible.

However, in a transfer update for the Scottish Sun, Roger Hannah has poured cold water on the rumours of Wilson joining Celtic.

He said: “I would be astonished, and I’ll tell you why with two words: Kelechi Iheanacho.

“Celtic went and got Iheanacho after he was released by Sevilla at the end of the window in the summer.

“He’s a striker of great quality, great CV… but seldom fit, and that’s come back to haunt Celtic in the first half of the season.

“Limping out of the League Cup final, still unavailable. I can’t see Celtic wanting to go down that route.

“A guy in his 30s – great goalscorer, great CV, but seldom fit – and will also cost you an arm and a leg.”

Iheanacho remains out injured after his innocuous exit in the final against St Mirren at Hampden. He has scored three goals since joining the Hoops.

Celtic’s other summer transfer targets update

Niko Sigur is now ‘unlikely’ to join Celtic, after reports of a move being ‘one step away’ emerged earlier this week.

Jocelin Ta Bi, on the other hand, looks set to join. He has described the move as a ‘dream come true’ ahead of moving from Israel.

Silas Andersen has been valued at £8.6 million by BK Hacken, amid reports linking him with both Celtic and Rangers.

Stefan Ortega, Nacho Laquintana and Ibrahim Diabate have also been in conversations.
