Celtic have missed out on defensive target Oskar Wojcik to Werder Bremen.

It was revealed in April that Celtic had failed in a bid to sign Wojcik in January, but still saw him as a ‘priority’ for the summer.

The Hoops reportedly made a €4 million+ bid to sign the defender in the final days of the winter window, but the deal didn’t materialise due to other sales by Cracovia, as well as a gap in valuations.

Serie A clubs were also interested, but it has become clear in recent weeks that Wojcik’s preferred destination was Bremen.

Werder Bremen sign Oskar Wojcik for fee rising to €6 million

Werder confirmed the signing of Wojcik with a TikTok meme on Thursday evening.

Sky Germany report that they agreed a deal worth up to €6 million with Cracovia, as well as a 15% sell-on clause.

22-year-old right-footed centre-back Wojcik has enjoyed a breakthrough season at Cracovia in the Polish Ekstraklasa.

After failing in their January bid, the Hoops did complete the signing of a central defender before the end of the window, in the shape of Benjamin Arthur on loan from Brentford.

The 20-year-old was largely a back-up player, with Liam Scales and Auston Trusty remaining Martin O’Neill’s first-choice pairing.

The writing had seemingly been on the wall after Wojcik made his intention to join one of Europe’s strongest leagues clear.

He said on TVP Sport: “Simply put, if an offer comes along with an interesting plan, a vision for development, we’ll consider it.

“It’s not like I hear a name, the first club that comes along, and I already want to leave Poland.

“All of this needs to be thoroughly analyzed. The most important thing is that I don’t want to join a club just to be there. I want to play and become a better player.

“My heart definitely tells me to stay at Cracovia, because it’s my club, which has great and supportive fans. I never imagined I could get so much from the fans.

“On the other hand… there are dreams. I’ve always imagined playing in one of the five best leagues in Europe.”
