Celtic reignite interest in Premier League star as Brendan Rodgers looks to lock down options

Brendan Rodgers won’t take no for an answer this summer where his transfer targets are concerned.

Celtic want positions strengthened and the manager will have a few thoughts on the areas he needs.

The Hoops might need as many as seven spots at least looked into by recruitment chief Paul Tisdale and his staff but perhaps one of those players has already been identified.

Kasper Schmeichel won’t play forever and at 38 he’s coming towards the end of his career while Vil Sinisalo is still to be fine-tuned as a Celtic number one.

So Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has today been named as a stopper who has re-emerged on Celtic’s radar following last summer’s interest.

Celtic are interested in Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka

The Newcastle Chronicle claim Celtic are “keen” on the experienced Slovakian goalie who played at the Euros with his country as recently as last year.

Dubravka has only played 16 matches this season for the Magpies in all competitions but he did just recently sign a contract extension at St James’ Park which prevents him leaving on a free.

The 36-year-old has managed eight clean sheets in that time under manager Eddie Howe and has shown his worth when Nick Pope has been injured and out of the team.

Last summer there were a whole host of goalkeepers linked with Celtic as they sought a Joe Hart replacement before Schmeichel was the man brought to the club.

What Dubravka said last time he was linked with Celtic

67 Hail Hail understands Peter Vindahl Jensen was a serious target but Celts opted to go for the experienced free-agent.

Dubravka was one on the shortlist and the player admitted at the time that he was unsure what his Newcastle future held amid Celtic links.

He said: “I have no idea. I have seen they are talking with other goalkeepers. I need to speak with the manager first.

“What is the plan for me? What is my future? I don’t know if they want me to stay or not.

“It is difficult for me because I have been focused on my job with the national team.”
