It seems as though Celtic are on the lookout for a new goalkeeper this summer.

Following Kasper Schmeichel’s retirement last season, it was debated whether Celtic would search for a new shot-stopper, despite Viljami Sinisalo’s strong form between the sticks.

One name that has recently popped up on Celtic’s transfer radar is Hertha Berlin goalkeeper Tjark Ernst.

German outlet Wolfsburger Allgemeine reported Celtic’s interest in Ernst, alongside VfL Wolfsburg, who were relegated from the Bundesliga last season.

Tjark Ernst will cost Celtic ‘£4 million’

Celtic have two recognised goalkeepers on their books right now – Sinisalo and Ross Doohan, who returned to the club last summer as the third-choice keeper.

Right now, Doohan has been pushed up to second choice, so if Celtic were to sign Ernst, would he come in as a back-up or a straight-up starter?

Perhaps that answer lies with the transfer fee above Ernst’s head.

The Daily Record have claimed that it would cost the champions of Scotland ‘£4 million’ to land the 23-year-old’s services, which probably tells you that if he joins, then it’s to take the main gloves and not sit on the bench.

Ernst’s numbers for Hertha last season

Ernst and his Hertha Berlin side missed out on promotion to the Bundesliga last season, securing a seventh-placed finish, but the man between the sticks produced a strong campaign.

The German keeper started 33 out of 34 matches and has played for Die Alte Dame since 2023, with his current contract running until 2027.
