Celtic are starting to score goals, but you sense there is plenty more in the tank that Wilfried Nancy’s side are yet to unleash.
Last time out against Aberdeen, Celtic should have hit close to double figures, but that lack of ruthless nature in the final third proved what supporters have been saying for so long… a striker is needed in Glasgow.
Yes, Celtic put four goals past Livingston on Saturday afternoon, but given the chances Nancy’s side are now creating on a regular basis, you sense that a proven goalscorer would eat these up and score a hatful for the champions of Scotland.
Rather than looking abroad for a new number nine, Peter Grant thinks Celtic should look towards Edinburgh, and Hibernian’s hitman, Kieron Bowie.
Should Celtic sign Kieron Bowie from Hibernian in January?
Celtic told to sign Kieron Bowie
One of the issues some pundits and supporters have is the fact that powerhouses like Celtic aren’t utilising the domestic market enough.
Speaking on Go Radio, host Paul Cooney discussed Celtic possibly signing Bowie rather than looking at the ‘inflated prices’ abroad.
Former Hoops man Grant agreed and urged Celtic to ‘take him’, and even thinks the hard-hitting centre-forward would get ‘better’ in the famous green and white colours.
Paul Cooney: “The name of Kieron Bowie has come up time and time again. People are saying, ‘Look at home rather than at inflated prices.'”
Mark Guidi: “Bowie’s name is popping up. Hibs will do well to hold onto him short-term. Inevitably, he will go. It’s just a case of what he goes for. Is he going to be a £3 million striker? Or is he going to nudge up, let’s say, for example, what Aberdeen got for Miovski? £6 million. He’s going to be somewhere in and around there.”
Grant: “I watched him at Raith as a young man. He’s like a big drink of water. That’s what he was like, and he just needed to fill out. I think the injury helped him with that.
“He went to Fulham. I am sure it was Northampton he went to, maybe on loan, and he started scoring goals. He started scoring more goals.
“I watched him in Europe this season. I thought he was excellent against experienced players away from home. He played a fantastic match. He was bumping them. Taking the ball really well. He went off the boil and lost a wee bit of form because he had an injury again.
“I just think he is going to get better. If I am Celtic, I would take him as well. There is no doubt in my mind because I just think he is going to get better.”
You have £20m to spend in the January transfer window. How are you spending it?
Celtic told what transfer fee they should pay Hibernian for Bowie
At the age of 23, there is a lot of promise in the legs of Bowie, who scored for Hibernian against rivals Hearts on Saturday during their 3-2 win.
That was Bowie’s seventh Premiership goal of the campaign, and Grant stated that he would pay no more than ‘£3 million’ for the Hibs man.
“I don’t think Hibs would sell him, at this moment in time, unless you were offering them £6 million,” stated Grant.
“But being realistic, you would pay £3 million for him. That’s what you would pay. If they went above, you would say ‘not at this moment in time.’ You would pay £3 million.
“Hopefully, he is going to come, score goals for you, and you will triple your money.”
