Atkinson was linked with a move to Celtic last month, at the same time the Robins were credited with an interest.
The 22-year-old was a standout in English League One last season, making 41 appearances in the regular season and playoffs.
He was subsequently named in the league’s team of the year alongside former Celtic favourite Aiden McGeady and striking transfer target Charlie Wyke.
Atkinson is eager to make the step up, telling Bristol City’s official website: “I’m excited and looking forward to playing in the Championship. It’s another step up and I’ve done plenty of those in my career.
“I’ll be attacking it the same as I always have. That’s head on, working hard and hopefully it will go just as well as my previous step-ups.”
Rob Atkinson not the only English based player Celtic have been after
Celtic have already been scouring the Championship and League One this year. The club has brought both Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide in on free transfers from Sheffield Wednesday.
It would have cost a bit more than that to secure Atkinson from Oxford United, but certainly a fee within our budget. I’m speculating, but it could well be the move for Urhoghide halted Celtic’s interest in Atkinson.
Ange Postecoglou has confirmed there are no global limits on where the club will be sourcing transfers from this summer. However, it seems that the UK market still holds great appeal to the club.
As long as it makes sense financially, there’s no reason not to look to England.
