David Strelec’s father reveals if Celtic are leading the race to sign Slovan Bratislava forward

Celtic and David Strelec is a link that has died down in recent months but fear not, it’s back.

Slovan Bratislava’s failure to qualify for the Champions League may have damaged their chances of keeping hold of Strelec, who has been a target for the Hoops in the past.

A bid for Strelec was rejected in January with Slovan demanding too much upfront.

There has been competition from Championship outlet Middlesbrough too, however, with Brendan Rodgers keen to add another number nine, the chance to sign the Slovakia international could be an attractive one.

Celtic are back in for David Strelec

The 24-year-old is a lethal goal scorer and has four goals from five games this season but no Champions League football means that he is likely to be sold.

His father confirmed to Slovakian outlet Sport 24 that Celtic are rivalling Middlesbrough, and others, for his signature but is not sure if there is an outright winner for his signature just yet.

Strelec Snr said: “While Slovan was in the race for promotion to the Champions League, the club’s management did not consider David’s transfer, or rather, it was not on the agenda.

“I assume that in the coming days until August 31, when the transfer period ends, the ice will move in the direction of a departure and things will get hotter around David.

“As far as I know, several clubs are interested, including Celtic and Middlesbrough, which were also interested in him in the recent past. I myself am curious how it will ultimately turn out.”

David Strelec would be a statement of intent from Celtic

This Celtic side can score goals, no doubt about it, but Strelec would take it to the next level.

Not only is he a proven goal scorer at European level, he also has experience of winning trophies too.

Playing for Celtic means you need to be comfortable with handling pressure and it’s clear he has nerves of steel.

It may mean that the number nine position is bloated for options, but it’s clear he would be a great option.
