Former Celtic left-back Emilio Izaguirre has confirmed he’s spoken to Honduran international teammate Alberth Elis about a dream move to Celtic, The Glasgow Times reports.
The Daily Record have reported this month that the Scottish champions had a bid for the winger rejected last summer and Elis has also spoken publicly about his desire to make a switch to Celtic Park.
As quoted by The Record, the Houston Dynamo attacker said: “There are clubs who would be nice to play for because they are always challenging for titles and cups.
“I have spoken to Emilio about Celtic and he’s told me they are at another level.
“For me, since the day I left Olimpica, I’ve never hidden the fact that my dream is to go and play in Europe and compete in the Champions League.
“Houston know my position. They have offered me a new contract and I will decide on my future at the end of the season. I would have liked to have played 100 games for the club, but that may not be possible now.”
Now Izaguirre, who was a fan favourite for years on the left flank, has added to the speculation.
Praising the player’s ability, the veteran defender thinks Elis and Celtic would be a good match.
As quoted by The Glasgow Times, he said: “Alberth is a very good friend of mine and I spoke with him about Celtic.
“He’s a very good, fast player. He’s very fast and strong and he’s good in the air. He’s played a lot of football and is good on the ball.
“A lot of players in Honduras would like to play for Celtic because it’s a big opportunity to play in Europe and play for trophies. Celtic is a big club, the biggest in Scotland.”
Elis has been a standout player in MLS over the last few years, scoring an impressive 33 goals and assisting 25 times for Dynamo in 97 appearances, primarily from the right wing position (Transfermarkt).
He’s in good form currently too, netting two in two games during the ongoing MLS Is Back tournament.
Celtic could do with a winger this transfer window to complement James Forrest and Mohamed Elyounoussi.
Mikey Johnston is out injured, leaving only the inexperienced Karamoko Dembele as a viable natural option out wide.
Whether a move for Elis materialises however is another matter, with priorities elsewhere in the squad currently being focused on.
