Evan Ferguson told to take Championship move with Celtic target’s Roma future in doubt

Evan Ferguson’s links to Celtic almost seem too obvious not to happen.

The Ireland striker, who left Bohemians to join Brighton four-and-a-half years ago, is in need of a stable club where he can find form.

67 Hail Hail reported that Celtic were monitoring Ferguson’s situation last October, with his loan move to Roma not working out as expected.

Then, in December, Ferguson scored a brace against Celtic, in an incredibly predictable sequence of events. Roma won 4-0 at Parkhead in Wilfried Nancy’s second game.

Plenty has happened since then, but after the latest development, Ferguson’s Roma future has been plunged into more doubt than ever.

Celtic target Evan Ferguson’s Roma situation changes

A few weeks after his Celtic brace, Ferguson scored his first goal for Roma, also grabbing an assist in a man-of-the-match performance against Genoa.

However, since then, reports have continued to call his future in the Italian capital into question.

This has been compounded by Roma’s signing of Donyell Malen from Aston Villa, on loan with a £25 million obligation to buy.

This pushes Ferguson further down the pecking order – and speaking to Balls.ie, Danny Murphy has told Ferguson to make a surprise move to the Championship.

He said: “Evan Ferguson to Wrexham? Possibly. I think the problem with Wrexham for a Championship side is that they’ve got so many players, including a lot of forwards.

“But yes, that type of challenge, a team that wants to get promoted, a team that plays good football, a team that plays to your strengths, could work…

“I heard Evan Ferguson talking about his difficult couple of years and how he lost a bit of confidence. Injuries can do that, of course.

“He showed a lot of quality when he first burst on the scene. He’s a big lad, scores goals, has decent technique and is strong. I think all of us expected him to kick on…

“I think that playing regular football and scoring goals is the key to getting your confidence back, and that might mean dropping a level even if it was to a Championship side, where he would be the main man and become appreciated again.

“Forwards are always judged on goals and you need to play to score them. He’s at Roma, I don’t know if he’ll get enough minutes and game time there for him to recapture that form.”

Celtic target Evan Ferguson’s future

Ferguson made his first friendly appearance for Bohemians’ senior team aged just 14. He joined Brighton at 16, making his debut six months later.

An early developer physically, he eventually started getting minutes in the Premier League as a teenager. Along with Cesc Fabregas, he is one of the only two non-English players to get ten goal involvements in the division before the age of 18.

At his peak level of hype, interest from Chelsea and Manchester United was reportedly fended off by a £100 million price tag set by Brighton.

But a few years on, that feels a long, long way away, after unsuccessful loan spells at West Ham and now Roma.
