Journalist Tim Vickery is one of the most respected English-language authorities on South American football, so when he talks about one of Celtic’s transfer targets it’s worth paying attention.
Vickery has worked for many outlets over the years but is perhaps best known for his stints on BBC radio. In his capacity as an ESPN correspondent, he’s been running the rule over the big transfer rumours on the continent this summer, primarily from English Premier League clubs.
But the subject of Celtic’s interest in Gremio star Ferreira has also come up, after the Bhoys were linked with a move for the play during the week. Football Scotland reported that the attacker could be available for £6m and that the Bhoys are looking at him as a potential replacement for Jota. It’s said they’ve even made an initial approach to the Brazilian club.
Vickery’s analysis of the situation is interesting, writing on ESPN: “Also attracting attention is 25-year-old winger Ferreira — often referred to in the diminutive (Ferreirinha) because he is so small and slight. But he is exciting. Right-footed, he usually cuts in from the left, has evasive one-on-one skills and can score as well as create.
“Celtic, with their tradition of wing play, have reportedly shown an interest. Injuries have been a problem, though, which would make him something of a gamble — but then again, that applies to any transfer, especially one taking a player across the Atlantic.”
The injury part doesn’t sound great, but otherwise, it would be fantastic to get another dribbling attacker in the door who can offer that X-factor that we’ve lost in Jota’s sale.
Ferreira’s issues this season seem to have been with his hamstring. But it’s worth noting that the Brazilian has played in recent cup and league matches, so hopefully those issues are behind him.
It’s yet to be seen how serious Celtic’s interest is or if it will develop into formal bids, medicals, flights and all the usual rigmarole. But he’s a name worth keeping an eye on at the very least.
Vickery seems to think he has talent, but the risk he raises will be weighed up very carefully before the Bhoys spend any serious cash.
