Celtic target Filip Benkovic is set to join Belgian side OH Leuven, The Daily Mail reports.

The paper says that Leicester City have moved to agree a deal with the continental outfit. Neil Lennon is said to be unsure about committing to a Benkovic signing.

It comes just hours after John Kennedy namechecked the Croatian stopper in a press conference, confirming Celtic’s interest.

Speaking on the official Celtic YouTube channel, he said: “It’s probably a position now, with Christopher Jullien being injured, that we have to look at. We are a bit short in that area now.

“Filip is one who we are very well aware of and have spoken about. We know what he is capable of, and he’s a guy who has been here and knows what it’s about.

A new dawn beckons for Celtic in Europe, as Joe Hart shows his class once again

“So he is certainly on a shortlist of options to strengthen the centre-back position.”

No Celtic return for Filip Benkovic

Benkovic enjoyed a successful loan spell at Celtic during the 2018/19 season. He was signed by Brendan Rodgers that summer and would go on to make 27 appearances in a treble-winning campaign.

However, he fell out of favour when Lennon was appointed and would return to Leicester.

Since leaving Glasgow, his progress has been incredibly slow.

Injury problems have limited his appearances and he couldn’t work his way into the Cardiff City team this term.

Leicester recalled him early and appear to have wasted no time in deciding his future.

The Celtic search for a defender will go on this month.

Kennedy seemed to indicate that Benkovic was just one of a number of options, so hopefully, the recruitment team can get working on that shortlist.

In other news, another Celtic fixture change has been confirmed.
