Former Celtic defender lands multi-million-pound move

Former Celtic defender Moritz Jenz has officially left Lorient and signed for Wolfsburg. The centre-back spent last season on loan at the Bhoys before leaving in January for another temporary switch to Schalke 04.

Now he’s found a permanent home in Bundesliga. Sky Sports Germany reports he’s made the move for between £6m and £8.5m, demonstrating how expensive it would have been for Celtic to turn that loan into a permanent move.

Jenz has signed a four-year deal at the club and said after making his move: “For me, it’s the perfect environment for further development. I’m a player who puts my heart and passion on the pitch and gives everything for his team and colours.”

Moritz Jenz was only ever cover at Celtic

Jenz made 19 appearances in the first half of the season for the Bhoys, but only really as cover for Carl Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers. Once that pair were back up to full fitness, it became quite clear that the German wasn’t going to displace either of them under Ange Postecoglou.

Nonetheless, he enjoyed his time in Glasgow and will likely always savour his experiences playing for the Bhoys and interacting with the Celtic support. He was popular during his short spell.

The switch to Wolfsburg looks like a good one for him. They finished eighth in the German top-flight last term and it’s certainly a step up from the relegated Schalke.

Like all former Celts, we wish him all the best for the rest of his career. It didn’t quite work out for him here, but there’s a solid defender there and hopefully, he can show that consistently in his homeland.
