South Korean side Gangwon FC have confirmed on Instagram that attacker Yang Hyun-jun will become a Celtic player this summer. The club say he will make a farewell statement to fans after their match at home to FC Seoul today.

The statement read: “[OFFICIAL] Yang Hyun-jun to Celtic’s transfer has been confirmed. There is a greeting from player Hyun-jun Yang after today’s game🙌 Everyone please stay with us until the end🧡”

It has been reported that Celtic will pay around £2.1m for his services. The player links up with compatriot Hyeongyu Oh in Glasgow, as the Bhoys continue to explore the best football markets in Asia.

Yang is not playing with his club in today’s match against Seoul, so there is no risk of any injury or fitness issues. He should be clear to join up with Brendan Rodgers’ squad in Japan when they make the trip east early next week.

The winger scored eight goals in 31 matches during the 2022 league season, marking himself out as one of the top young talents in the country.

He hasn’t managed to replicate that this term but has also been vocal about the fact he wants to leave South Korea to join the Bhoys. All this transfer uncertainty can’t have helped his football.

Now he can focus on the Scottish champions and bring back his most vibrant form, competing for a place in the first team alongside Daizen Maeda, Liel Abada and Sead Haksabanovic amongst others.

Yang becomes Celtic’s third summer signing after moves for Odin Thiago Holm and Marco Tilio. Celtic are pursuing an aggressive strategy of pursuing young talents with potential. Now we get the excitement of seeing if it pays off.
