‘He has the ability’ – Celtic backed to secure ‘£4m’ transfer of player who beat Arne Engels to big award

Arne Engels has had a pretty interesting start to his Celtic career.

Here is a player who was purchased by Celtic last summer for a club-record transfer fee of £11 million, and is on course to win the Treble in his debut campaign.

Added to that, Engels has been a regular starter under Brendan Rodgers, alongside his captain, Callum McGregor, and the unpredictable Reo Hatate.

Despite all of that, the 21-year-old has still divided opinion this season, and that price tag continues to be held over his head.

Either way, it seems as though Celtic will bulk up in the summer, especially with the improvement in the Champions League, and the middle of the park could be one area that could be targeted.

So, alongside bench players, Luke McCowan and Paulo Bernardo, could Engels be facing more competition next season? And against a player who beat him to a PFA award this season?!

Celtic backed to sign Lennon Miller from Motherwell

Lennon Miller won the PFA’s Young Player of the Year award, beating Engels to that prize, for his outstanding performances for Motherwell.

But journalist Mark Guidi has backed the 18-year-old to make a ‘£4 million’ switch to Celtic Park ahead of his expected summer departure.

Guidi explained that Miller has the ‘ability’ and ‘mentality’ to cope at a club like Celtic, and everything that comes with it, as he told Go Radio.

“I think to go to Celtic, I don’t think he would have a problem, I think he would be an asset,” said Guidi.

“The club and the transfer fee wouldn’t be a problem for Celtic. I think Celtic would feel around the £4 million mark would be a real solid investment.

“But it’s who gets bids accepted? I have a feeling it would be three or four clubs having bids accepted, and Lennon Miller will speak to them all.

“Like all young players do now. They are all surrounded by good people. The money will be secondary. It’s about what’s right for the next stage of my career, because I am going to get a lovely contract anyway. If I choose the right club, then bigger rewards will come two or three years down the line.

“He is going to go somewhere. I would love to see him stay in Scottish football. If he goes to Celtic, I don’t have a problem at all. I think he has the ability and the mentality to cope.”

Miller vs Arne Engels stats this season

Celtic could do with extra quality in their midfield, even if other areas are of greater concern, such as their centre-back spots.

This is the type of deal that Celtic usually do, so don’t be surprised if it happens during the following months.

But how do Engels and Miller fare in the Premiership this season, as posted by WhoScored?
