Hyeongyu Oh’s impressive goal record for Genk explains Feyenoord’s £9m bid for ex-Celtic man

Hyeongyu Oh is a player who split the opinion of many Celtic supporters.

The South Korean striker showed flashes that he could be an effective striker for Celtic but having to compete with Kyogo Furuhashi for that elusive starting spot proved very difficult for Oh.

Oh left Celtic last summer after he struggled to convince Brendan Rodgers that he had what it took to become the Hoops’ main striker.

After Oh joined Genk, the 24-year-old admitted that as soon as the Belgian club showed interest, he knew he had to leave Parkhead to kick-start his career.

And it appears that the move looks like it is paying off.

Feyenoord’s £9m for ex-Celtic striker Hyeongyu Oh

In an incredible turn of events, Feyenoord appear to rate Oh highly after placing a £9m bid for the Korean this summer.

Belgian media outlet HLN says the Eredivisie club, who will participate in Champions League qualifiers next season, that Genk have rejected the £9m bid and are desperate to hold on to the Korean striker.

Just like at Celtic, Oh has played most of his football from the Genk bench but has clearly impressed enough to make the Belgian Pro League club stand their ground.

Oh did score some important goals for Celtic and, ironically, faced Feyenoord in the 2-1 Parkhead win back in 2023.

So what has triggered Feyenoord to place a bid now when the 24-year-old has scored the same number of goals for Genk as he did for Celtic?

Here is why.

Hyeongyu OhPlayedGoalsAssistsGoals per minute
Celtic471201 every 109 minutes
Genk411231 every 72 minutes

Despite making most of his appearances from the Genk bench, it’s taken six games less for Oh to equal the same number of goals.

Oh’s average goals per minute has also improved as he finds the back of the net in Belgium on average 37 minutes quicker than he did in Scotland.

Celtic are likely to have a sell-on clause inserted in the sale of Oh to Genk but, as yet, the terms are unclear.
